EOFY Prep for Tradies: What to Tackle Before June Runs Out

It’s late June, and EOFY is creeping closer by the day. But if things have slowed down on site, this could be your golden window to get your books in order – before the tax-time panic starts. EOFY prep for tradies doesn’t need to be a mad dash at the end. A few small actions now can make a massive difference later (and keep your accountant off your back).

Here’s what to focus on.

Review Your Xero File 🧾

Let’s be honest – things can get a bit messy in Xero when you’re flat out. If you’ve been doing the reconciling yourself or leaving it for ‘one day,’ now’s the time to give it a proper clean-up.

What to look for:

  • Bank transactions that haven’t been reconciled
  • Old bills or invoices still showing as unpaid
  • GST codes that don’t look right
  • Duplicate or incorrect entries that throw your totals off

A tidy file means fewer surprises when your accountant starts asking questions – and less chance you’ll overpay (or underclaim) tax.

Sort Out Payroll and Super 💰

If you’ve got employees – or even just pay yourself – payroll is a key part of EOFY.

Here’s what to get sorted:

  • Make sure all payslips have been processed correctly
  • Finalise your payroll through Single Touch Payroll (STP)
  • Reconcile super payments to make sure nothing’s missed
  • Pay your June quarter super before 30th June if you want the tax deduction this year

Super deadlines trip up a lot of tradies, especially when cash flow is tight. But getting on top of it now could save you thousands in missed deductions.

Prep for Your Final BAS of the Year 📊

The June BAS is often the biggest of the lot. It covers everything from wages and GST to PAYG and fuel tax credits.

Start prepping now by:

  • Reviewing your BAS reports in Xero
  • Matching up your GST totals with your Profit and Loss
  • Making sure PAYG withholding amounts are correct
  • Flagging anything that looks off

Don’t wait until your accountant or bookkeeper is flat out – a bit of early prep means a much smoother BAS process.

Check Your Expenses and Claimable Deductions 🔍

EOFY is also the time to make sure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to.

Common deductions for tradies include:

  • Tools and equipment
  • Ute and vehicle expenses
  • Fuel, tolls and travel
  • Mobile phone and internet
  • Uniforms and PPE
  • Materials paid for out of pocket

Now’s the time to chase up any missing receipts, make sure they’re entered in Xero, and check they’ve been coded correctly.

Get Clarity on Your Numbers Before July 💡

Even though it’s not time to lodge anything just yet, it helps to know:

  • How much profit you’ve actually made
  • What your upcoming tax bill might look like
  • Whether your PAYG instalments need adjusting
  • And whether you’re in a position to invest, upgrade or hire next year

EOFY is more than just ticking boxes – it’s your chance to reset and plan ahead with confidence.
